Interview with Kingwood Ballet - New Caney

Kingwood Ballet is a DBA company of Kingwood Dance Theatre a non-profit 501(c)3 pre-professional performing ballet company. Kingwood Ballet is a long-standing respected ballet organization that blends professional performances with artistic development and brings quality ballet productions to Northeast Harris and Montgomery counties, providing a local residents an affordable alternative to the downtown destinations. 

The company was founded by Sheryl Rowland in 1984 when she recognized there being a void in the performing arts in this area. The company started by providing the community with a variety of ballets at local venues. The first Nutcracker performance was just 2 years later in 1986 and continues to be a holiday favorite.

Kingwood Ballet provides the community with multiple productions throughout the year. The Nutcracker Ballet in December consists of 4 shows and features over 160 dancers over the course of a weekend. Our Ballet Gala at The Hobby Center, is a night of dance with classical & contemporary ballets by renowned choreographers from across the US. Our springtime storybook ballet is held at the Nathaniel Center in dinner/theatre format, an event unique to the community. And we start the season with our highly anticipated event “The Sugar Plum Tea”. This event has grown from 1 tea on a Sunday afternoon to now a total of 4 teas over a weekend in November. It is a perfect opportunity to introduce young guests to the ballet who are not quite ready to sit through a full-length ballet. Many dancers they see performing on stage became interested in ballet after attending the Sugar Plum Tea themselves as a young guest.

Kingwood Ballet is an all-volunteer run organization. We remain that way so all funds are directed to our productions. The best part of being involved in this organization is watching the dancers grow in strength and talent, but more importantly, in character. A dancer must work at merging the musicality and gracefulness of the art with the athleticism needed to perform the movement. Throughout their training dancers learn discipline, teamwork, collaboration, communication, confidence and perseverance, life skills that will follow them long after they have left Kingwood Ballet.

Much of the interest in Kingwood Ballet comes from multi-generational families. Our family-friendly productions are perfect for those seeking live entertainment through the arts.

We have a community initiative ongoing to add a new story book ballet to our repertoire, The Little Mermaid. The community has been extremely supportive of our other ballets, and we felt it was time to expand. We are very excited about this new ballet and the opportunities it will provide our dancers and community.

We are looking to reach a further radius of households as we hope to see the need for additional performances of our Nutcracker and storybook ballets and continue to add new ballets to our repertoire.
