As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series, we sat down this week with Regan Thompson, managing director of Meckka Dance Project.

Tell us a bit about your business:  What does your business offer and how long have you been around?
MECKKA Dance Project was created in 2016. My goal was to give dancers “more” than what the local studios were offering. Our mission is to offer superior training in all genres to students, incorporating unique methods to inspire and cultivate well rounded dancers in addition to offering amazing performance opportunities in commercial, performance and competition dance. In June of 2021, we expanded and opened our studio at 21693 FM 1314 #200 in Porter.  We now are able to offer “more” to ages 3 through adults.

How did you decide to get involved in this line of work? How did the business get started?
My daughters are dancers. Once we started traveling outside of Texas, I saw a lack in their training. I wanted my girls to have the same opportunities that dancers do all over the United States, not just what was offered locally. Therefore, I created MECKKA which was at first to be only a small competitive and performance team. After winning Nationals year after year and having my dancers invited to perform in music videos and film, people started reaching out wanting to train with us. I rented a studio downtown for several years and offered training there. The studio was sold; I had to make the decision to continue MECKKA or move on. I love helping dancers build confidence and grow stronger in their artistry so moving on was not an option. Now I have 20 times the number of dancers I can help than I did before.

Tell us a couple things you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?
We have many competition accolades other than our National winning, which is awesome. I love seeing all the hard work pay off on stage, but what I am most proud of is the unique opportunities we have been given. My MECKKA girls have been in music videos, films, performed at charity events, published in magazines and more!

What is your favorite part of running this business?
My favorite part of running my business is doing it with my daughters. I love seeing the impact they have on young dancers and how they inspire so many.

Who is your target market or ideal customer/client?
We have training classes for ages 3-to adults. All levels, beginner to advanced.

Can you tell us something about yourself as the business owner? What is your background?
I started my in-home personal training business 15 years ago, so I was a business owner before MECKKA. I handle the business side of things and my artist director, Amber Thornton, makes sure all of the artistic needs are met. Together we are the ultimate team. It has been fun to grow MECKKA with her and I look forward to the continued growth.

Are there any special promotions, annual sales, or special events that you'd like to mention?
We encourage first time dancers to come try classes out for free before they register to make sure we are a good fit. We also have several “Bring a Friend” to dance weeks through out the year.

How do you see your business growing and improving over the next couple of years?
I plan to continue to offer superior training and unique opportunities in the years to come. Our goal is to outgrow our current space and expand.
