Two Sacramento Men Charged in 2023 Porter Murder
Detectives with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Gang Investigations Unit have arrested two suspects connected to the November 1, 2023, murder of Vyshawn Johnson in the 20100 block of Bitter Root Drive in Porter, Texas.
Through a joint investigation with the Sacramento Police Department and Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, authorities identified and arrested 31-year-old Nishad Scruggs and 28-year-old Trevon Oates, both from Sacramento, California. Scruggs was arrested in Sacramento on June 25, 2025, and later extradited to Texas, where he remains in custody at the Montgomery County Jail. On October 7, 2025, the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office presented the case to a Grand Jury, which returned an indictment for Oates. He is currently in custody in California on an unrelated murder charge and will be extradited to Texas once that case is resolved. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office thanks the Sacramento Police Department and Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office at 936-750-5876 and reference case #23A323581. To remain anonymous, contact Multi-County Crime Stoppers at 800-392-STOP (7867).

Hopefully a judge here will keep them both in jail it with no bond or a high bond. Looks like one of them has already committed a second murder.

Glad they caught both of them and got them off of the streets. Hopefully they will have a high bond and not be on the streets, committing more crimes.
