KEEP ALL ANIMALS INDOORS

In Texas, there are laws that make it illegal to leave a pet outside in extreme weather without adequate shelter, food, and water. Some cities also have specific ordinances to protect pets in extreme weather conditions.

UNLAWFUL RESTRAINT OF A DOG

Texas Health & Safety Code 821.101

A pet owner may not leave a dog outside and unattended by use of a restraint unless:

-Owner provides the dog access to adequate shelter
-A sturdy structure that must provide the dog protection from inclement weather (including snow, high winds, and extreme low temp).

CRUELTY TO NON-LIVESTOCK ANIMALS

Texas Penal Code 42.092

A person commits cruelty to a non-livestock animal if he or she fails to:

-Provide necessary food, water, care or shelter
-Abandon an animal in their custody
-Confine or transport an animal in a cruel manner
-Injures someone else's animal
-Overworks an animal

THINK AND THUMP
A warm vehicle engine can be an appealing heat source for outdoor animals. Check underneath your car, thump your hood and ensure no furry feline is underneath.

@TownHubAdmin : Ah! I'm glad the extra words showed up in the text version. Was having a hard time guessing what the "Think and Thump" meant.

Great that they have loaner crates - would not have thought of that.

I'm glad the neighbor across the street with the pit tied up 24/7 doesn't have him anymore. I don't know what happened to him, as he's been gone for over 2 weeks now. But wherever he is, I hope it's better than where he was. He would've stayed out in his igloo, which is not adequate shelter for freezing nights.

@garfieldgurl : Good!!! That would have been worth a call to report, if they still had him. Hopefully in a better home now.

We've got two neighborhood cats who are hot-swapping the warming shelter on our back porch -- Mr. Jones and Dublin. (A couple of years ago dw took a male stray to TLC. We started calling him "Newly Neutered" -- then "Double-N," and finally "Dublin." He still drops by most mornings to bum a meal.)
