MCTXSheriff Issues Scam Alert for Montgomery County Residents

Loading Image...

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is issuing a warning for citizens regarding a telephone scam that has been affecting Montgomery County.

Scam callers are contacting residents of Montgomery County advising they are with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. The scam caller advises the citizen that they have an outstanding fine or they failed to show up for jury duty and a warrant will be issued for their arrest if they don’t pay a fine.

The citizen is then instructed that in order to get the issue taken care of, they must purchase a cashier’s check at a certain location and call back to get the warrant dismissed.

Anyone who receives this type of call is encouraged to ignore them. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office will not call to advise you of your fine or infraction nor have you make restitution in this manner. All fines are administered and paid through the appropriate court.

Here are some facts to remember regarding these types of scams:

-Be wary if you are being asked to act immediately. Scammers typically try to push you into action before you have time to think.

-The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office never calls or emails citizens to advise them of warrants.
-Never wire money, purchase a cashier’s check, or use a prepaid debit card when told to do so by a person that you do not know.

-To ensure you are truly speaking to a member of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, you should hang up and contact the main number directly, 936-760-5800 and then ask to speak to the law enforcement officer who called you.

-If you have questions or concerns regarding telephone calls placed to you on behalf of any government agency soliciting money, in any form, please contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Officer non-emergency line, 936-760-5800.

So sad that someone would try to trick people like that.

Oh yeah… the call about a warranty against you. I've gotten quite a few of those. But the one that would make me think twice (but just for a second) would be the jury duty one.

That's just crazy. I hate thieves. . Everyone needs to talk to their family members about the scam. You never know if your aunt or uncle or mom or dad or son or daughter will fall for this.

I have a pretty good size contact list, if the call doesn't show up as being on my list, I don't answer.

@HarleyRider : An advantage to having an out-of-the-area cell phone number (and friends in that other area who know to use email rather than phone) is most of the spam is self-identified. If it's from the same area code as my number it's almost always junk.

My mom's landline gets the warrant type stuff on occasion.

@HarleyRider : Yep. I screen calls ALL the time. Unless I know I'm expecting a call from insurance, or repairs, then I answer (but always wondering if I should 😝)

@jjjj : Oh yes. I got 5 calls today within 10 minutes from numbers that have my area code and the first 3 numbers. A while ago, while working for a city office, I called one of those numbers back from my office number (it's blocked or the number is different than the one I'm calling from) and this old man answered the phone. That's when I found out his number got spoofed. I wonder if mine has gotten spoofed and calling others.

@jjjj : @garfieldgurl : My phone also announces who is calling, so there are times when it rings, it's followed by "Scam Likely" announcement...

Sometimes it just has the number and I have to answer it because I have rental property and I never remember if that's one of my renters or not. I just hate those people that just call constantly about wanting to buy the properties

@Sweetie : Put your renter's number in your contacts...you can always delete them when they move out...
