Tips for Safe Shopping during Tax Free Weekend

Tips for Safe Shopping during Tax Free Weekend

It's time for the annual Sales Tax-Free weekend!

The Comptroller encourages all taxpayers to support Texas businesses while saving money on tax-free purchases of most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks (sold for less than $100) during the annual Tax-Free weekend. Qualifying items can be purchased tax free from a Texas store or from an online or catalog seller doing business in Texas. In most cases, you do not need to give the seller an exemption certificate to buy qualifying items tax free.

Some safety tips from Harris County Constable Mark Herman:

1. Have a plan before you head out to shop.

2. Be vigilant, don’t be an easy target. Lock your vehicle, take your keys with you and hide your belongings.

3. Park in well lit areas and travel in numbers.

4. Keep an eye on young children, especially in the parking lots.

5. Have your keys in your hand when you go to your vehicle and try to limit the numbers of items you have in your hands.

I have a safe plan. I will shop early tomorrow morning and not return to a retail store until Monday!

@TownHubAdmin : While much of that is good basic precautions, I am certainly not going to drag a crowd along to buy a pack of construction paper at walmart. That seems an odd one for this scenario.

@Sweetie : And I'm sure Walmart was plenty crowded enough as it was!

(Construction paper is under $3 so not much in the way of sales tax, and I already picked it up curbside a week ago, nice and safe!)

@Sweetie : I just went to HEB and CVS. Thought about going to humble but just didn't want to deal with the crowds. I was only going to get a few things in the savings wouldn't be worth fighting the crowds.
