Father Of The Year Found In Your Backyard!

It’s debatable, but the Father-of-the-Year Award could go to the woodpecker dads that visit your feeders. During the daytime, dad woodpeckers often share equally in the nesting duties with their mates, but come nighttime, the fathers often solely incubate the eggs and brood the nestlings. They also bring food to the nestlings as often, or even more so, than the mothers. When the young brood fledges from the nest, dads spend the next few weeks leading them to great food sources, including his own favorite backyard bird feeders.

If you are interested in learning more about Woodpeckers and how to attract them to your backyard feeders, please make plans to attend an educational talk with John Mims, ornithologist and co-owner, along with Susie Mims, of Wild Birds Unlimited of Kingwood. Details can be found here: www.facebook.com/eve nts/1162166201239500

Though they're a beautiful bird, I can do without them in my yard. It hasn't happened in a while, but for about 3 years, we've had an occasional woodpecker to visit. The visit is always VERY early morning, and he hammers away on the metal insert of our fireplace. It's not a fun sound to wake up to!

@Bloom : Oh yes we had one that would come every Saturday morning at 5:30 AM and he started on metal on top of the house and he would not stop for about an hour and a half and then he would leave for about 30 minutes and he would come back and do that again for another hour every Saturday morning. He did that for about a year he probably went to the wrong house and did that because after a year he didn't come back

@Sweetie : That sounds like my friend! I am such a light sleeper, and I hated for Woody Woodpecker to wake me up.

I haven't heard woodpeckers early in the day. I love hearing them pecking (is that the word?) at trees but they're usually way up high and I can't see them. Sorry to all who have to deal with the metal sounds.
