Avoiding Road Rage can save your life!

With the recent rise of road rage related deaths, Constable Mark Herman offers some great tips to slow down, calm down and stay safe even with aggressive drivers on the road.

These tips can save your life!

PRACTICE POLITE DRIVING HABITS: Avoid tailgating, cutting off other vehicles, speeding, weaving, leaving high beam headlights on, and erratic braking. Don’t drive in the left lane slower than the rest of traffic. Merge politely, and always err on the side of being courteous.

SLOW DOWN: Simply let aggressive drivers go around you and typically, they will quickly be on their way.

GET AWAY FROM AGRESSIVE DRIVERS: If you notice a driver with aggressive behavior, put some distance between you, whether you slow down and let them get ahead or change lanes so you’re not right next to each other.

DON'T MAKE RUDE GESTURES OR YELL AT OTHER DRIVERS: Remember, you’re not the police, and it’s not your job to remind others how to drive, even if they’re doing a terrible job.

USE YOUR HORN SPARINGLY: Horns should primarily be used in emergency situations. Tap your horn lightly if you need to get a driver’s attention, and give drivers ahead of you at lights a few extra seconds of grace before honking to remind them to move through the intersection.

APOLOGIZE IF YOU'VE DONE SOMETHING WRONG: If you’ve accidentally cut off another driver, braked too fast, or made some other mistake that could be offensive, simply smile and wave as an apology. This will disarm and calm most drivers.

ADJUST YOUR DRIVING ATTITUDE: Give other drivers the benefit of the doubt. Many mistakes are unintentional and not meant as a personal offense. Consider whether responding aggressively is worth being injured or killed.

HAVE REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS ABOUT YOUR DRIVE TIME: Know when you’ll be driving in traffic, give yourself plenty of time, and don’t set unreasonable expectations for how fast you’ll get to your destination.

CALL 911 IF YOU'RE UNDER ATTACK: If an aggressive driver attacks you, call 911 right away and stay on the phone with the dispatcher. Consider driving to the nearest police station, convenience store, or other public location with witnesses. Do not drive home!

@TownHubAdmin : Great suggestions! Nobody wants to get involved in a confrontation on the freeway. It's not likely to end well.

I don't make anyone mad on the roads. I don't want anybody shooting into my car. But I think that in some instances they're not shooting because someone pulled in front of them or cut them off or gave them the finger I think they're shooting them just to shoot them

Before moving to Houston, I've never experienced such bad road rage. My goodness! No wonder there are signs on the main freeways to remind Texans to drive friendly. I was a victim of a crazy man, who was break checking me after I made a rude hand sign for tailgating me (I was new then). Learned that lesson right away that I should let those bullies bully me if I don't want to die. I had Bentley (my old Yorkie) with me and we were on our way to the vet for a regular checkup. That incident happened on the Beltway 8. After that day, I got a dashcam. I'll never forget that day and every time we drive over that area, I remember it clearly.

It is bad here. I'm used to driving in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast where you do honk all the time and inappropriate hand gestures are the norm. I've seen road rage there too, but most don't take it personally, it is just the norm. People here probably don't honk nearly enough as I see them sitting on their phone making people miss a light or cutting in at last second and people allow it...that is frustrating

@TownHubAdmin : All good suggestions. These days I don't react at all even if someone cuts me off or gives me an obscene gesture. It's just not worth it.

@Jt88888888 : Yeah it seems to be getting worse over the years here. These days I just try to stay in my own lane and not make eye contact with anyone. I drive like a little old lady lol

@garfieldgurl : Oh my goodness! That is very scary. A dash cam is a great idea. I'm glad that you were not injured.

@Sweetie : I agree. I don't want to make anyone mad. Even if someone cuts me off or shoots me the bird I just ignore them.

@Weathergirl5 : Me either. I quit honking too unless....it's to avert and accident. Too risky!

@Cbear : Yep way too risky. I just leave earlier to allow myself plenty of time to get where I need to be.

@Weathergirl5 : Me too! I'm not in a hurry to go anywhere. People in Houston are just crazy drivers. I have no interest in going there
