College Board announces the SAT test will go digital

Loading Image...

College Board announced today 1/25/22 that the SAT Suite of Assessments will be delivered digitally.

In November 2021, College Board piloted the digital SAT in the U.S. and internationally. According to the results, 80% of students responded that they found it to be less stressful and 100% of educators reported having a positive experience.

Among the changes: the digital SAT will be shorter—about two hours instead of three for the current SAT, with more time per question. The digital test will feature shorter reading passages with one question tied to each, and passages will reflect a wider range of topics that represent the works students read in college. Calculators will be allowed on the entire Math section. Students and educators will get scores back in days, instead of weeks.

Students will be able to use their own device (laptop or tablet) or a school issued device. If students don’t have a device to use, College Board will provide one for use on test day. If a student loses connectivity or power, the digital SAT has been designed to ensure they won’t lose their work or time while they reconnect.

The SAT will be delivered digitally internationally beginning in 2023 and in the U.S. in 2024. The PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 8/9 will be delivered digitally in 2023 with the PSAT 10 following in 2024.

Isn't that going to help kids cheat?

They clarified this last night. They said that they can do it digitally and have a calculator but they will be in a room with a proctor at the college

It makes sense to a degree but you still need to do it in person or cheating would be so easy. Honestly, I'm surprised they even have the test as typically other factors now mean so much more....gender, race, whatever other quotas matter

I'm sure most people prefer online tests but I am just the opposite. I prefer a paper and pen test. I guess I'm old-school though. Not looking forward to having to take the teaching certification test on a computer. I'd much rather paper.

@Jt88888888 : Yes it would definitely have to be still administered in person. Otherwise there's no way they can monitor for cheating. It's probably going to be just a big computer lab type environment.

@HarleyRider , the US birthrate is pretty low already. No need to depress it further.

@Weathergirl5 : The last standardized test I took, literally decades ago at this point, was right when they were transitioning to digital so there was a choice for paper/pencil or a computer one that adjusted questions based on how you'd done on previous questions - no option to skip something temporarily and go back later. I picked paper rather than change things up after having filled in bubbles on every past standardized test in my life. By now though maybe all the kids are used to doing things both ways. Are any of the standardized grade school through high school tests on computer, or all still whatever 'scantron' is now?

I didn't grow up in the US, so I didn't have to take the SAT but we did have to take a test to enroll in university. I studied so much for it. Just thinking about it is bringing PTSD feelings 😅

@jjjj : I think most standardized test in schools are still paper and pencil. I know the STAAR test is. There is some students that have to take them on computer because of learning disabilities. I am a horrible test taker to begin with. But I like paper and pencil so I can physically mark out the wrong answer choices and make notes.

@Weathergirl5 : Yeah, I bet the test center won't like it if you do that to their computer screens Emoticon!
