EMCID responds to $1,200,000 loss on New Caney music festival at Valley Ranch...

The "Rock the Ranch" festival financial information has been release by EMCID and shows a roughly $1.2 million loss on the event.

Total revenue for the event came out to $92,000 with total expenses coming to over $1.3 million dollars, for a net loss of roughly $1.2 million dollars to EMCID. EMCID funds are primarily obtained through local Montgomery County sales tax revenue.

To put the $1.2 million loss in perspective, the total 2017 approved EMCID budget includes $10.2 million in total revenue for the full year. ( emcid.com/images/fin ancial-information/d ocuments/budgets/EMC IDFY2017Budget. )

EMCID has released a statement concerning the expense of the event below:

------
From: East Montgomery County Improvement District

"Rock the Ranch Music Festival, a new event hosted by the East Montgomery County Improvement District and produced by 542 Entertainment Inc. this past May, consisted of two days of performances by urban/hip hop artists, rock and country bands, as well as throw-back favorites from the 1990s, mixed in with freestyle motocross shows, a carnival, food and artisan vendors and a BBQ cook-off. The purpose of the event was to drive tourism to the new Valley Ranch Town Center development and surrounding areas. The first ticketed festival for EMCID — its $1.3 million budget, younger demographic target audience, concert/festival producer and event date — was approved by the Board of Directors in a September, 2016 regular meeting that was open to the public.

Those who attended or participated in the festival May 12 and 13 enjoyed the music, motocross shows, food, and up close and personal attention the celebrities provided on stage and in post-performance meet and greets. It was a level of entertainment not before seen in East Montgomery County. Nearby, Valley Ranch retailers and area hotels reported they experienced an increase in shopping and attendance at their establishments.

However, it was disappointing to see attendance at the festival so low, which in turn would mean that direct revenue generated would be low and nowhere close to covering expenses. EMCID realized payments relating to the festival of just over $1.3 million and revenue totaling just under $92,000, for a net loss of about $1.2 million.

EMCID’s Board of Directors and staff feel let down by 542 Entertainment and its performance that resulted in discouraging ticket sales.

It’s a learning experience for us all — one that causes us to pause and carefully evaluate any plans moving forward for another paid event in the future or one of the magnitude of Rock the Ranch.

EMCID currently produces three free annual festivals at its complex: the Back to School Bash (September 12) and the Spring (TBD) and Fall Extravaganzas (October 26). These events started with about 400 in attendance; the festivals have grown to between 3,000 and 5,000 people per event. In 2016, EMCID added another free event, the East Texas Fire & Ice Festival, held at New Caney ISD’s Texan Drive Stadium in the Valley Ranch Town Center. The event features country music bands, a fire performer, ice sculptor, snow sledding, a midway, games, food and artisan vendors, and a fireworks show. Fire & Ice is scheduled for Saturday, October 21.

Since 1998, EMCID has provided through community development initiatives more than $19 million in funding to our local fire departments, law enforcement agencies, the county, local cities, numerous non-profit organizations, festivals and community projects, and to the East Montgomery County Scholarship Foundation. This year alone we will put more than $4.2 million back into the community through these organizations and events.

Community is everything to EMCID’s Board of Directors and staff. We understand you’re disappointed with the result of Rock the Ranch. We are, too. However, we will always continue to look for ways to bring better amenities, better shopping and dining experiences, and a better quality of life for East Montgomery County’s residents. "

As it says above, EMCID has provided more than $19 million in funding since 1998.
Surely they deserve to spend another $19 million on themselves to build a new "home" at Valley Ranch. Funny how those numbers mesh! Heck, next year they'll be able to brag how they "donated" $1.2 million to bring quality entertainment to the area via "Rock the Ranch." It wasn't a loss...it was an investment in the community.

Gag a maggot. Frank McCrady did nothing to check out Don Allen Holbrook, the dubious consultant that had a hand in every Earthquest pie. Holbrook waltzed away with over 1.2 million. The EMC taxpayers lost 24 million on that in cluding the 21 million in bonds that must be satisfied. Oh, and need I mention that McCrady kept supporting Holbrook and paying him to live the lifestyle of the rich and the famous long after it was obvious Earthquest was dead in the water and that charlatan Holbrook had sued numerous reporters, journalists and even the poor taxpayers that had dared to comment about the Earthquest boondoggle.

Now, McCrady has another botched project to his credit. 1.2 million more is down the commode. How many more bloodbaths must the taxpayers endure before this incompetent board is sent packing? McCrady has been grossly overpaid for the job he is doing and this latest debacle got him yet another huge bonus and a renewed contract. When will McCrady be shown the door?

That is what happens when you charge a ton of money for tickets. This is New Caney/Porter....not River Oaks. Get with the program. It's like having to pay hundreds of dollars to see the Texans play...its ludicrous. Whoever set theses ticket prices should be ashamed of themselves. Just look and see now what it caused. Instead of a positive outcome, you ate
$1,200,000.00 That was really dumb.

The purpose of one of these events is for all or at least, most of the area residents to be able to come out and enjoy it. That did not happen.

Another issue is there was almost no advertising. I live in New Caney and didn't know it was happening. Even so like someone else said it was way too expensive.

Yes, at $79 dollars a head, it would have cost me almost $400 for my family. And that is just to walk in the door......

Tax and spend, tax and spend. There are so many needs in this community. To bad we have EMCID trustees that spend our hard earned sales tax dollars so frivolously. And they feel that they need a bigger EMCID building? Really?

1.2M? Lost? That is about the most irresponsible load of bs I've ever heard. You had to know the selling price for that event was absolutely outrageous! EMCID actually agreed to that? What kind of no common sense excuse of a meeting was held that board members actually agreed to that? Was there even anyone present? We were glad to see the new stadium for NCHS, and then an academy- even better. And then another Walmart? And another Kroger? Etc etc, but nothing was gained by it except for the 1.2 million that was thrown away. I've lived up here for almost 20 years and NC and Porter were a best kept secret for years. You didn't mind that people put their noses in the air about the fact that you lived "up there". It kept them out! And now, it's gone down hill. I understand growth etc, etc, but what I don't understand is wasting our tax dollars for some bs concert that you could have gotten better talent to show up, and this rumor of a theme park! Please. We're not the passle of dumb rednecks you think we are. This looks like it deserves an audit. Lord knows if anyone else had to explain a 1.2M loss they wouldn't keep their job.
