Man Charged After Investigators Find Three Unlicensed Assisted Living Facilities

A 36-year-old Montgomery County man is facing a misdemeanor charge after investigators alleged he operated three assisted living facilities without required state licensing. According to court records, Jeffrey Canlas was charged with Operating an Assisted Living Facility Without a License, a Class A misdemeanor.

Investigators with the Montgomery County Fire Marshal's Office were reportedly alerted to two neighboring homes on Spring Pines Drive and later identified a third location allegedly connected to Canlas. Authorities said several residents were bedridden and that the properties allegedly lacked required fire safety equipment, including sprinklers, alarms and fire extinguishers.

Court records also indicate Canlas had previously been notified about another alleged unlicensed facility in January and was instructed to bring the property into compliance and relocate residents to licensed facilities.

A charge is an allegation, and the case will proceed through the legal process.
