EMCID to develop 64-acre dog park and nature trails

The East Montgomery County Improvement District is expected to close this month on a 64-acre tract of land in New Caney that will become a haven for nature lovers, hike and bike enthusiasts, and dog owners and their furry friends. This land has been under contract since December 2021 and is located on FM 1485 at Gene Campbell Boulevard.

The project will be completed in phases, the first phase consisting of planning and development. The remaining phases will include building a dog park and walking trails. The desire is to create a park that attracts people and nature, including gardens that bring butterflies, birds, and other wildlife.

EMCID plans to apply for grants to help keep costs down.

That will be great for dog lovers. Finally a place where they can run. Sounds like it's going to have other things which is going to be really nice.

Finally!! That'll make up for the lack of sidewalks and unsafe walking places for us. We would have to drive there but at least is not like going to Kingwood.

"EMCID plans to apply for grants to help keep costs down. " When has EMCID ever been worried about costs? Or maybe, they're worried that it might cut into their palatial dreams for Valley Ranch Center.

@otto : Where does EMCID get their money from

@Sweetie : Texas has a state sales tax rate of 6.25%. Municipalities can assess an additional 2% tax, bringing the total to 8.25% max. EMCID has glommed onto that 2% throughout our area. The result is that local governments get no direct benefit from the sales taxes collected within their borders -- it all goes to the state and to EMCID. I believe EMCID is still paying off the costs of their Dino Park boondoggle from years ago. (See article).

How Frank McCrady finagled to keep his job at EMCID after that fiasco remains a mystery to this day.

@otto : I'm from this area but lived up north for many years. My first time going to the big auto show in Detroit, among the exhibitors trying to lure manufacturers to places like Ireland, among the high end marketers from any number of companies, etc., there was this one booth with a big satellite image of our forests around 59. Giving away little plastic dinosaurs.

Just about the most out of place booth vendor I've ever seen. But I had a nice chat with the lady. That was pre-Great Recession so the vendors were otherwise all super high end and I hate to even think what that booth must have cost.

EMCID election today! Hurry and vote for whomever looks like the best stewards of our tax dollars, anyone who didn't early vote!

@TownHubAdmin : I am MUCH more in favor of a dog park and hike/bike trails than a dinosaur park!

@otto : What?? That's crazy! Didn't even know that existed. I need to read the article more but I just wanted to say this before I forget.

It's cool to see and a neat idea but yeah I'm a bigger fan of lowering costs and taxes first and foremost always

@otto : Oh I remember that. That was a mess. There were accusations being thrown against everyone over this. And all that money spent and they got nothing out of it. The dinosaur park never came to fruition did it
