@otto : I'm sorry, but I respectfully disagree that most of this nation doesn't want the wall. I do believe if it was put to a vote, and I'd love to see it done, that most of the people definitely do want the wall. In every other country that have built walls there is overwhelming evidence that the walls work. Have you seen what they are calling a wall on our Southern border???? Some of it is barbed wire. Now there's a real wall for ya... if your a cow. Some of it is great and then just ends. Some of it has been opened up for drainage. It's truly disgusting and why they even did that is unreal. $5.7 Billion dollars is a blip in our system. They could find that in the wasteful jobs in our gov't. Heck... they can save that amount really fast if all the senators and congressman/woman would lose their pay when they are not in Washington DC to resolve the problems of our great Nation. They need to get along. But, there is no reason for pelosi and all dems saying we're not doing "anything" that the president wants, because he won the election and we didn't. How extremely lame is that. Only hurts us!!!! Just sayin' . Don't need to argue over this. Some see it and some don't. I only hope America can see how things are doing great right now and getting better. They need to work on other things to get us back to a working government for and of the People. Not arguments between parties. BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE !!!!

I'd love to see a bipartisan effort to take that $5.7B and agree on some projects to fix our crumbling infrastructure.

If all members of congress (house and senate) gave up their entire salary for the year, not just when they're not in Washington, it'd come to less than $1.4B. Remember what Everett Dirksen said, "...a billion here, a billion there. Pretty soon you're talking about real money."

RE popularity of the wall. This article is a month old, but I doubt that the trend has shifted much since then. www.nytimes.com/2019 /01/12/upshot/trump- border-wall-polls.ht ml

Oops, I misplaced my decimal point. I shouldn't have said $1.4B -- it's actually less than $149M or $0.14B.

The original post is weather.
The real issue is climate.
Weather is the cold snap that hit Chicago last week (while Australia had record setting heat 122 degrees). Climate is the fact that trees are dying off at a rapid pace because the drought caused by climate change is killing them. That and beetles who do not die when winter comes because it doesn't get cold enough. Year after year.
Yes the immigrant should have spent more time in jail (weather) but the total immigration issue is "climate." Immigrant labor fixed Houston after Harvey. Get rid of them?

Definition: delusion (delusional): characterized by or holding idiosyncratic beliefs or impressions that are contradicted by reality or rational argument, typically as a symptom of mental disorder.

1. $5.7 (or $5.1) billion dollars is only a down payment for the wall. The real costs are upwards of mid $50 billions, with the purchase of land thru the use of eminent domain (a practice all Republicans despise).

2. If the crisis was real wouldn't you have heard the governors of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California screaming at the top of their lungs that there is a HUGE crisis. The silence is deafening.

3. Why did the crisis only pop-up before the midterm elections? And then immediately die away after the election. Is it possible that the President has a dog whistle to wake up his base?

4. If the crisis was real why wasn't it fixed when the Republicans controlled the House, Senate and White House? I am sorry but the Republicans were only worried about passing tax breaks for the wealthy- nothing else. As an aside, what was the first bill Gov. Greg Abbott signed after taking over the Capitol? A bill allowing guns on campus. And the second? A resolution allowing the State Guard to track the US war games going on in Texas since the wingnuts convinced him that it was a national coup by President Obama to take over Texas... (see above definition). Interesting to Google: Jade Helm 15.

5. The President was willing to sign the bill giving $5 billion for a border wall until Rush and Ann told the president that his administration was "toast" if he did not get his complete wall. Now he has to make a stand even though the Republican Senate will not allow another shut down- mud splattered on them and the President.

I am disturbed by people who say they can find the money in the current budget through waste. I have seen many politicians use that as a basis for getting elected. It does not happen, because it isn't there. I cannot smile, grimace maybe, not smile on this true story: During President Obama's term the Republicans all of a sudden had this huge issue with the deficit. You see Republicans only care about the deficit if a black Democrat is in the White House. In order to attempt to balance the budget, they passed across the board spending cuts. These spending cuts devastated the government and government services. Meanwhile, when Bastrop ( if I recall correctly) was burning to the ground, the Republican Congressman called the Forest Service to get an air tanker there to help with the fires. When told that there were no longer any available tankers outside of the ones fighting California fires, he asked "why." The answer he was given was when you cut budgets something has to give and they had to cut back on air tankers. Cutting budgets to find money for a wall will have unintended consequences.

Yeah, yeah, yeah find the money in the current budget. I have heard that line many times before. Maybe we could get Mexico to pay for it?

The issue is climate not weather.

@WillyGeeTX : I am not saying the USA should send DACA's or other illegals here back to Mexico, ...but remember the "Green Card" to have the privilege to work here in the USA? I believe they have their place here, just as they have for many, many years, as migrant workers. I have no problem with "legal immigrants" that want to come here. But the "legal immigrants" have had to learn what the constitution is, what our laws are, learn English and be able to converse, etc. The difference is they wanted to be American "citizens". They paid a very high price and waited a very long time to come here legally and it is a spit in the eye of everyone of them to know this is happening. The illegals are here, millions of them, but I don't believe they should be afforded the privilege of voting, because they are here "illegally". They need to be able to take care of themselves, feed themselves, cloth themselves, and it would be very nice if they actually wanted to be Americans living in America!
Your #1 That's great. I think the people in the entire Nation of America would rather pay that price and be safe and stop the drugs to a trickle instead of a flood. Our kids are suffering greatly! Gov't has been bloated for many, many years. It's a fact! ...and they make more money, for the same jobs than, non-gov't positions make. Of course it's bloated in many ways.
#2 Forget about California, it already has a wall and it's a lost cause in sooo many ways anyway. As far as Texas, our governors for many, many years have been screaming about the border crossings. The ranchers living along the border are begging for a wall. Their cattle are killed all the time, their homes broken into, their lives threatened. As far as New Mexico, ...they have been blue for many years. They do whatever they are told... period! Arizona has also wanted the wall. Their ranchers are in harms way everyday as well. " The Mexico-US border is the most frequently crossed border in the world, with approx. 350 million "documented" crossings ANNUALLY". That figure is only "documented" crossings.
3. Both parties have dog whistles. So that is nothing new, but I'd be willing to bet Trump has a lot fewer, even in his own party.
4. The crisis is REAL and the "can" has been kicked down the road by many, many presidents. The last few presidents or more all addressed that fact in their speeches and stated the wall needed to be built, including the Bushes', Obama, Clinton, etc.. It wasn't until President Trump decided to actually "do it" that they all jumped up and said "no way". ...yes... it is political, but it needs to be done. We just might have a president that has the backbone to do it.
5. Oh well - here we go again with the Rush and Ann thing. The drive-by media says it everyday. Same ole, same ole!!!! I'm pretty sure President Trump does "his own thing". I've heard more nonsense and complete demagoguery from the main stream media. They all say the "exact" same catch phrases, never reporting anything different and are extremely irresponsible news outlets. Their fake news is repeated over and over again, hoping people that don't do their research , will believe it.
Your budget info. sounds like talking points from the previous administration. The worst president in history. Obama lied to the people over and over again, regarding their insurance plans, doctors, affordability and he knew when he said it that it was a lie. He stole from Medicare to fund his Obama-mess and left the Medicare program in the lurch (which was paid for by every American citizen who is on it). He was the most apologetic president in history as well, bending and apologizing for America being the Greatest Nation in the World. Sorry about that... I'm not apologizing for this Great Nation ever, because it is the greatest Nation in the world.
Now that we have hashed this out, others can read and maybe go do a little research of their own.

@otto : Sorry, but NewYork Post has been caught up in democratic demagoguery for a long time now. Another democratic run paper. New York has gone off the rails since Juliani left.

@dcaent82, it's not the "Post," it's the New York Times -- the most respected newspaper in our country. I know that Trump calls the Times "fake news" -- he says that of every news organization that dares to be critical of Trump the Almighty. The only news org that Trump likes is his personal house organ, Fox News. If you describe the NYT as "demagoguery," then we have nothing to talk about.

The NYT "used to be" the most respected newspaper in our country. Yes, Trump does call out the "fake news", FOR WHAT IT IS. ...and he does it because they are all saying the same thing and show no respect for our nation in the articles that they write. If the NYT is your go-to, ...well.... I'm sorry for you. I agree. We have nothing more to say at this point.

@otto : Lord Mountbatten in post WWII was charged with getting Indochina (Vietnam) in line with the World Potsdam Conference. The north half was to be surrendered by the Japanese to Chiang Kai-shek. The southern half would be surrendered to Lord Mountbatten who would turn it over to the French. The problem was the Viet Minh communists in the south refused to follow the decisions made by the Potsdam Conference. Thus Mountbatten concluded: "To be a reasonable man in a world of extremists is to court constant disappointment."

One parting shot...Trump, himself, has defined "fake news." It's news that's critical of him. It has nothing to do with whether the story is true or false -- if his ego gets bruised, it's by his definition "fake news."

Stop making excuses for being lazy. God bless the working man they built this country with sweat not pen and paper.
