I know many of you were waiting restlessly for the latest about the tardigrades (water bears). Well, here it is. Emoticon

Scientists have discovered tardigrades have the highest amount of foreign DNA in their genomes of all animals.

These seemingly indestructible animals -- that have been rocketed into space on the outside of a satellite and survived -- stitch in foreign DNA along with repairing their own when re-hydrating after desiccation.

They have foreign genomes up to one-sixth of their total genome! Makes you wonder what percentage would constitute calling them a different species!

It's interesting how over time the places that we thought couldn't contain life CAN. I remember in school and I know this is a bit way-back-when, but the Arctic was referred to as a "cold, barren desert". I got such a kick out it when they found microorganisms that could survive in ice.

And, when extremophiles were replaced by other organisms in the rank of what organisms could survive the hottest temperatures; that was pretty cool. I mean they NAMED them extremophiles because they could take the hot temperatures and then when they found OTHER organisms that could survive even hotter temperatures they had to call them thermophiles and made them part of the group extremophiles. They didn't expect to find organisms that could live under those conditions.

Or, like we are always finding out how to get closer and closer to absolute 0 degrees Kelvin but can't quite get there. Basically we are told by nature when we can and when we can't cross boundaries and it has nothing to do with our perspective...lol!
