Some of the first scary movies that I shared with my kid were old Alfred Hitchcock movies. I think the first one I introduced was The Birds, which freaked me out when I was a kid. It didn’t have much of an effect on my kid.
I remember my mother was watching a movie on television one afternoon and I asked her “Can I watch it too?” She said no because it was too scary, and she sent me outside to go play. Well, I snuck back in and peeked around the corner, and wouldn’t you know it, my timing was perfect! I looked in right as the scene of Vera Miles turning the chair around to see the skeleton of Bates’ mother played. I scampered back outside feeling so guilty I had disobeyed -- of course, the proof that I disobeyed was that I had gotten scared – that instead of playing, I started weeding the vegetable garden. When my mother came out, she said “What are you doing?” I remember saying “Nothing. I like how bright it is out here.” LOL...
I've never seen Psycho, but I saw Vertigo a few years ago. It wasn't really ghost-tries-to-kill-you scary, but the ending messed me up for several weeks, lol. Just when you thought life might start going better for the poor guy, bam. I think part of the horror of it was that you knew he'd never recover.
