Million Dollar Splash Pads?

I was reading the EMCID newsletter recently and one part stuck out at me: Paraphrasing, it said that EMCID had spent one million dollars of our tax dollars for the two recently built Splash Pads in Splendora and Roman Forest.

This left me dumbfounded. Splash pads are nice for kids and all, but how did we spend half a million dollars each for these? (and that doesn't even include the cost of the land) From what I can tell the EMCID board voted unanimously in approval of the project.

To put it into perspective, you could buy the land and build my house 3x times over, for the cost of just one of those Splash Pads. ($166k house x 3 => $500k)

I did a little research and Kraftsman, the company contracted to build the Splash Pads, has apparently been selling them in roughly the same price range to other municipalities, so I don't see any evidence that EMCID was paying more than other towns, but dang! Kraftsman must be making some serious profit on these things.

Have you taken your kids to the splash pads in Splendora or Roman Forest yet?
Did you realize they cost half a million dollars each?
Does anyone want to go in to the Splash Pad building business with me?

They are crooks. The Jurassic Park fiasco was an eye opener for many many people.

I have mixed views. On one hand, there are a lot of families in zipcodes that are low income and a free splash pad might be the only outing they get during the heat. Exercise is needed times 10 for our kids these days so having access to a park where they can stay cool and exercise and best, have fun is pretty awesome. My concern however comes in whether the budget has been set to keep it sanitary, to handle the upkeep(not cheap)and whether the neighbors/neighborhoods were consulted. Will there be added security? Sadly public parks tend to attract criminals. I don't think they are a "value add" to our community as far as property value so it would be hard to vote yes for such a thing, on the other hand when I was a child we frequently took advantage of free parks and activities as a family. So great in someone else's neighborhood, I just don't want one in mine. As far as price... with all of the required safety issues these days I can imagine it would be expensive, hopefully the price keeps some of our littles in our community happy and safe.

I opposed the splash pad in Roman Forest. The deal was that EMCID would build it, but they would turn it over to the City of Roman Forest to operate/support/maintain going forward. It was clearly spelled out that once it was in operation, EMCID would be out of the picture....forever. Keeping it sanitary may, indeed, be an issue. It's located in an area where Peach Creek has flooded in the past, and will again in the future. It's an additional piece of infrastructure to maintain in a city that has problems maintaining its infrastructure. The intentions were good. The results remain to be seen.

As much as residents in Roman Forest pay in property taxes, i think the swimming pool and splash pad should just be for those residents.

@Bilbobaggins

EMCID money only comes from sales taxes, though, not property taxes.

But a million dollars of everyone's money paid for that splash pad. Not very nice to want only the children of your community to enjoy it. If Roman Forest didn't want anyone else to use it, they should have built it without "everyone's" money. ...and Roman Forest must have agreed with the stipulations to begin with. Not being ugly here, just another view, as my children are all grown.

There was never a plan to keep non-residents out of the Roman Forest splash pad. The first three letters of EMCID stand for "East Montgomery County." All area folks are welcome.

Roman Forest tax dollars do go to support the city's swimming pool. Non-residents are welcome to use the pool, but there is a higher fee for season passes for non-residents. I think that's fair.
