Help Wanted: Crate Builder / Carpenter / General Labor
Builder 1
SUMMARY:
Builder 1 fabricates, constructs and repairs structural woodwork and wood products by written and verbal instructions; using carpentry tools and equipment.

KEY FUNCTIONS AND JOB SCOPE
1. Protects body from workplace environment by wearing and using required personal protective equipment (PPE) for the work being performed and in the location it is being performed.
2. Constructs and produces skids, pallets, wooden crates by following TPI standards and procedures
3. Applies banding and strapping product to finished crates using banding and strapping tools correctly without over-tensioning.
4. May perform spotter or rigger duties for pipe handling operation or over-size yard projects.
5. Abides by all safety rules and regulations at all times learning all aspects of the JSA’s for job function.
6. Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations
7. Conserves materials by using supplies as needed, does not waste materials and returns unused materials to supply storage
8. Uses equipment correctly by completing preventive maintenance checklist; following manufacturer’s instructions, reporting improperly working equipment for repairs and careful use of equipment.
9. Perform any other job duties assigned by Management. Duties may include working in other areas or departments as designated by management and warranted by the business need at the time.

Builder2
SUMMARY
A Builder 2 demonstrates above satisfactory ability in all Key Functions and Skills and Key Standards of Performance of a Builder 1 for a period of Three (3) months to one (1) year.
(A Builder 1 fabricates, constructs and repairs structural woodwork and wood products by written and verbal instructions; using carpentry tools and equipment).

KEY FUNCTIONS AND JOB SCOPE
1. Ensures construction quality that all finished wood products meet standards: square; proper number of nails and staples in box.
2. Applies blocking, bracing, bulkheads and multi-level wedges for pipe inside containers.
3. Packs freight into completed crates correctly, and closes the box correctly
4. Uses a tape measure accurately, weighs freight accurately; records information accurately
5. May operate the table saw, radial arm saw, panel saw, up-cut saw and/or hand skill saw.
6. Operates forklift (3,000 pounds to 12,000 pounds) according to all OSHA regulations.
7. May operate forklift (15,000 pounds to 62,000 pounds) according to all OSHA regulations.
8. Perform any other job duties assigned by Management. Duties may include working in other areas or departments as designated by management and warranted by the business need at the time.

Builder 3
SUMMARY
A Builder 3 or Builder Lead demonstrates above satisfactory ability in all Key Functions and Skills and Key Standards of Performance of a Builder 2 for a period of one (1) year to Two (2) years. (A Builder 2 demonstrates above satisfactory levels in fabrication, construction and repairs of structural woodwork and wood products by written and verbal instructions; using carpentry tools and equipment) and is now also performing at the following level:

KEY FUNCTIONS AND JOB SCOPE
1. Applies blocking, bracing, bulkheads and multi-level wedges for pipe inside containers.
2. Applies blocking and bracing to all types of flat racks.
3. Packs freight into completed crates correctly; and closes the boxes correctly.
4. Operates the table saw, radial arm saw, panel saw, up-cut saw and/or hand skill saw.
5. Provides carpentry information by answering questions, requests and training other builders.
6. Maintains team work by documenting and communicating actions, issues and needs to complete work.
7. Provides planning, organization, instruction, problem solving, training, and time management to a work team of three (3) to ten (10) builders.
8. Conducts safety meetings, JSA training, job overview assessment for safety and other variables.
9. Perform any other job duties assigned by Management. Duties may include working in other areas or departments as designated by management and warranted by the business need at the time.

KEY STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE
1. Demonstrates ability to control waste and conserve material resources of lumber, nails, and packing materials.
2. Uses the computer to communicate via e-mail, order log, and C2C status and updates.
3. Completes Quality Assurance process on all completed work and projects.

Skills Required:
Builder1
KEY STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE
1. Operates power nail gun and staple gun safely and correctly.
2. Operates banding equipment safely and correctly.
3. Operates miscellaneous power tools safely and correctly such as drills, compressors, chop saws, radial saws, etc.
4. Demonstrates proper handling and care of all tools, equipment and supplies.
5. May demonstrate understanding and ability to correctly perform the functions of a rigger or spotter for pipe handling and over-size yard projects.
6. Good attendance with good punctuality.

Builder 2
KEY STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE
1. Ability to read a cut sheet to build a box, crate, or skid.
2. Ability to design a box, crate of skid and enter correct cut lengths on a cut sheet.
3. Understands and recognizes types of crates: Style 1, Style 2, Style 3 and purpose of each type of box and the correct shipping method for each: air, ocean, road and rail.
4. Understands and demonstrates ability to apply various types of packing and wrapping materials such as: asphaltic paper, stretch wrapping, shrink wrapping, vacuum packing, desiccant, VCI tablets, etc.
5. Understands the correct design of bulkheads and multi-level wedges for pipe shipping via ocean and rail.
6. Understands and demonstrates correct procedures for packing freight into completed crate based on drawings, weight, size and other variable criteria.
7. Demonstrates ability to operate a forklift 3,000 pounds to 12,000 pounds according to all OSHA regulations by completing the classroom training, scoring 90 or above on the written forklift examination and scoring 90 or above on the operator driving test.
8. May operate forklift (15,000 pounds to 62,000 pounds) according to all OSHA regulations by completing the classroom training, scoring 90 or above on the written forklift examination and scoring 90 or above on the operator driving test.

TRAINING
A Builder 2 must demonstrate, explain, teach and train all key functions and standards of performance to at least: Three (3) Builder 1's and Builder 2’s before advancing to Builder 3.

Builder 3
KEY STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE
1. Demonstrates ability to control waste and conserve material resources of lumber, nails, and packing materials.
2. Uses the computer to communicate via e-mail, order log, and C2C status and updates.
3. Completes Quality Assurance process on all completed work and projects.

TRAINING
A Builder 3 or Builder Lead must demonstrate, explain, teach and train all key functions and standards of performance to at least Ten (10) Builder 1’s and 2’s before advancing to Builder Master or Builder Supervisor.
Expected Duration in this position as Builder 3 or Builder Lead is: Two (2) to Eight (8) years.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, to use hand to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and climb or balance.
He/She is required to walk; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk and hear.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics while performing the essential functions of this job include being regularly exposed to high noise level, working near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. Continuous exposure to shop elements such as noise, dust, odors and fumes is present.
