Event Details:

Reptile Open House set for Aug. 23
"Snakes and turtles and lizards, oh my!"

Yes, folks, it is once again time for Jesse Jones Park's Reptile Open House. Set for this Saturday, Aug. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be a variety of ectothermic celebrities on hand for the public to meet up close.

Snakes will be well represented by such ophidian stars as Lincoln the Eastern Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix), Eli the Northern Cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorous leucostoma), Pablo the Western Diamond-backed Rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox), Lucky the Burmese Python (Python molurus bivittatus) and Kitty Cat the Red Cornsnake (Pantherophis guttatus). Joining these reptilian all-stars will be kingsnakes (Lampropeltis), watersnakes (Nerodia), ratsnakes (Pantherophis) and a greensnake (Opheodrys).
Turtles will be represented by Gamera the Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys temminckii), Timmy the Three-toed Box Turtle (Terrapene triunguis) and Berlandier's Tortoise (Gopherus berlandieri), a mud turtle (Kinosternon) and a musk turtle (Sternotherus).

And last, but not least, there are the lizards. The largest lizards both come from Australia: The Bearded Dragon and the Blue-tongue Skink. Visitors may also get the chance to observe a Green Anole (Anolis carolinensis) from Texas, a Cuban Brown Anole (Anolis sagrei) introduced from the Caribbean and a Mediterranean Gecko (Hemidactylus turcicus). Truly a multinational saurian assemblage!

Reptile Open House is open to all ages and free of charge. Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center is located at 20634 Kenswick Drive in Humble.
