Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital to Offer Physicals, EKGs to Humble, New Caney and Porter High Schools Athletes - New Caney

As the official sponsor of Humble ISD, New Caney ISD and Sheldon ISD athletics, Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital performs electrocardiograms (EKGs) and on-site sports physicals for incoming freshmen at Humble, and New Caney and Sheldon ISD high schools.

Sudden cardiac death is the No. 1 health-related killer in young student athletes. That’s why an EKG – a noninvasive electrical tracing of the heart – is vital as they can detect problems with the electrical activity of the heart. The electrical system makes the heart contract and pump blood.

EKG technicians from Memorial Hermann Northeast will perform the tests. Physicians and other clinicians affiliated with the hospital will conduct the sports physicals.

The remaining schedule is as follows:
April 28           Humble High School    (EKGs 2-4 p.m.)
May 10            Porter High School (EKGs – Girls: 8:15 to 9:45 a.m./ Boys: 11:20 a.m. –
                        12:45 p.m.)
May 17            New Caney High School (EKGs 8:30 to 11 a.m. and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.)

Physicals will be conducted from 7 a.m. to approximately 6 p.m.

Physicals are required by the University Interscholastic League (UIL) for any student who wishes to participate in athletics. Results are reported to each athlete on site along with a recommended follow-up if problems are detected.

EKGs will be read by a cardiologist. Parents will only be contacted about results if additional follow up is needed. Questions about the screenings should be directed to the student’s coach or the school athletic trainers.
As a community and public service, Memorial Hermann Northeast has sponsored a wide range of educational programs and screenings for student athletes, coaches and trainers associated with Humble, New Caney and Sheldon ISD athletics.
