Judge Doyal On Being Reinstated

"I am enormously grateful to get back to work serving the people of Montgomery County.

The State Commission on Judicial Conduct reinstated me to my position as county judge yesterday. This was after hearing both an outpouring of support for me and my work, and focusing on the fact that my job is purely that of an executive in this county and not as an adjudicator of legal matters. I am glad that point has been cleared up and I am truly humbled by the support voiced for me by citizens and local public officials. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. The commission ruling is attached.

I am thrilled to get back to the critical budget issues and the work of the county. It has always been my honor to serve this county. I know I have followed the law in my work here and that I did nothing improper. My lawyer and I will deal with the misdemeanor charge in court and I will get back to dealing with the county business and continue to do all I can to serve this great and growing county." ~Montgomery County Judge Craig Doyal

Why is he a "Judge" if he is an executive in this county and not as an adjudicator of legal matters. I guess I don't get the position title.

I don't have a lot of free time but in my free time I have tried to find the answer to your question. I have even looked up the history of the position of judge. All to no avail. So, I am posting this reply to bump this thread in the hopes that someone more knowledgeable than I will answer why the position title is "judge". I may not visit for a month but I will certainly return to see if someone has enlightened us. It is a great question.

I'm not sure why the term "judge" is used, but it's not new nor is it unique to Texas. In Arkansas and Kentucky the chief executive of each county is the County Judge -- just like Harris and Montgomery counties here in Texas. It also used to be the case in Tennessee. These "judges" have executive power, but no judicial authority.
