Child & Officer Killed In Pursuit Crash

A Patton Village police officer and an 11-year-old boy were killed Sunday (6/19/16) evening after an SUV t-boned the officer's vehicle during a pursuit of a potential drunk driver.

Statement taken from DPS Trooper Richard Standifer:

Around 7:30PM, a call came into dispatch about a man urinating in public and exposing himself near the Valero on 59 & 242. Sgt. Stacey Baumgartner, of Patton Village PD, was sent to the scene. When he arrived, the suspect, 29-year-old Garrett William Nee, tried to run him over with his vehicle. Nee fled the scene and a chase ensued west on 242.

At the intersection of 242 and 1485, the suspect ran through a red light successfully, but the officer wasn't as fortunate. A white '98 Suburban that was traveling southbound on 1485 crashed into the side of the Baumgartner's patrol car. His vehicle was pushed into a light pole with extreme force. The Suburban rolled/flipped several times and eventually came to rest on the shoulder. An 11-year-old boy was thrown from the SUV and eventually ended up underneath it. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Sgt. Baumgartner and the occupants of the SUV were rushed to the hospital with extensive injuries. Baumgartner's injuries were too great and he died on the way.

In an unusual twist of events, Nee saw the entire crash in his rearview mirror and returned to the scene and waited. He was eventually placed under arrest for evading and could face more charges.

Very sad. This is another example where a high-speed police chase ended with tragic results. I think our area police departments should review their guidelines as to when high-speed pursuit is justified. In this case, I don't think it was.

This is tragic no matter how you look at it. I have the utmost respect for police officers and the job they do. However, I agree with the poster above. I do not think that pursuing a drunk driver through a red light was justified in this case. An 11 year old boy died as a result. Just not worth it.

I have to agree with Doc and Otto on this. The worst part is, that because someone didn't like seeing the dude peeing outside, there were two lives lost. I'm not condoning what he was doing, but look what the call resulted in...
