@Cbear : The friend who took the Pic was shocked! She said it took a bit to realize what it was - she was just going through the drive through for a burger.

@Bloom : I think seeing that might have sent me through the drive through without my food! Yikes!

True, but gators are usually calm. When I was in FL for a while it took me some time to get comfortable going on a job and having to step around some. One day one got angry and wouldn't let me pass and last time I ran there!

Gators are a dangerous animal. Do not think they won't hurt you or get too close. They are ambush predators and every year several humans are killed by gators in the southern USA. Alligators do not like fast moving water as they have a problem staying upright in fast moving water and that can drown them. If they cannot right themselves in water they can get into trouble. An alligator that has come into a human area because of high swift moving water is one you had best be wary of. It is not in its natural place to be and therefore likely to be upset and you don't want to get too close with that.

Be wary of any animal that can bite the bumper off a Datsun. That really happened to a friend of mine. He was going home late at night and there was a big gator blocking the road. He thought he would nudge it a little and it would move. Wrong - it bit the bumper off his vehicle. He went home by another route. Those are something best kept at a distance. My mother knew a woman whose leg was bitten off by an alligator when she was wading. They are not friendly and not something you want to mess with. Best to stay in your car when going through that drive through. Do not get out and go for a closer look as you might find that gator is a carnivore and you are to him meat. Those will eat pets, people and pretty much anything they can get their teeth into. Give that guy a wide berth and leave it alone. It will likely go back to the swamp when the water goes down and things return to normal. They are a normal resident of southeast Texas but they belong in the bayou and we belong inside the car in the drive through.
