New Caney Elementary School Assignment Turns Disastrous

Shannan Martinez, the mother of a second grade student at a New Caney ISD Elementary School received a call from her daughter's teacher regarding a class assignment to find images on the internet representing each letter of the children's names.

When Martinez's daughter got to the letter "N" she searched "Nasty" hoping to find pictures of bugs. The school's search filters were either not working or insufficient so I'm sure you can imagine they type of content that appeared.

The girl's teacher issued her a write up and called Martinez who is now angry at the school for allowing her daughter exposure to content inappropriate for her age. She believes the school should enhance its filters and that her daughter should not receive punishment.

It sounds like the teacher should be punished and not the student. She didn't intentionally seek out porn.

This is the ultimate learning moment. Every child using the internet need to know what to do when they come across stuff they do not want to see or read. Turn off the computer and call for help. My first grade students knew that and did it several years ago. This little girl should not be in any trouble.... or the teacher. Learn from mistakes and do things differently next time. This includes the school, teacher , parents and student. Take responsibility and grow in everyone's ability to problem solve. Stop the blaming.

Similar situation happened to my 6th grader. She was punished and treated like a juvenile delinquent. When I got the call I asked why there was no controls on a computer they issued my daughter. They required her to have it but did nothing to prevent her from seeing inappropriate content. Every laptop in my home has parental controls.

Why write her up? She's 7? Possibly...... Don't even explain, call her mom & the principal & amp up the filters. I am 30's, my kid wanted a hello kitty backpack.... That search did NOT give me what I was looking for!!! I highly doubt a 2nd grader can associate "Nasty" with pornography.

The teacher was following procedure. If she had not written the child up, she could have lost her job.

Porn sites are notorious for taking a common word an skewing it by one letter or two. One of my kids had this happen to them when they misspelled "Australia". It was porn site with 10,000 popups and hours of cleaning up the mess. The school's filters should have been stricter. This was a second grader, not a teenager looking for a cheap thrill.

@okiedokie I call BS. As a sub in NCISD I have seen teachers do whatever they want and follow which rules they want to follow and not follow others w no consequences.

@smtaylor
You can call whatever you like, it does not change the fact that the teacher did what she should have done. Think about what would have happened if the teacher did nothing and the little girl went home and told her mom what she saw on the computer that day.

The little girl more than likely was not punished-it was an innocent mistake. The administration was notified because of the teacher and a lesson was learned.
